nowadays i stay in Shanghai, China, every half a month in a month, thanks to the project.

now when i go to china, the network always annoy me – because it blocks wordpress.com! and it is not just wordress, but most, i’d say, most of other sites are slow - whether it is from KR or other country. i cannot watch the baseball on-air steam broadcast via internet – i can only see the text broadcast. it is used around 7~8 years before :(

Nobel winner blames cultural decline on “blogging and blugging”

i’ve encountered an interesting article from Code Project newsletter.

winner of nobel prize in literature, name is Doris Lessing, has made a speech that includes some lines like ‘computers and internet which has seduced a whole generation into its inanities’ (not exactly like this.)

when i read the article in ars technica, it looked as if Lessing criticize the internet and other new medium spoiled many people, so that they don’t read books at all and thus become inanities. and the article was showing some protest that actually blogs and internet made the people to read more, and what she said that ‘nowadays no one read the book’ is not a correct way to cover. well, in that sense, i also agree with that. internet made people (at least me) to read more, rather than away from reading. if she is telling about only ‘books’ are worth reading, then she’s telling somewhat wrong thing…. but important thing is, SHE WAS NOT EMPHASIZING the internet is wrong thing.

after reading the article, i read whole speech of Lessing’s. it was beautiful (yet sad) . she is living in Zimbabwe now, (she was born in Persia) and in the speech, she was talking about the polarization between western (rich) countries and poor countries. she put an example of a school from Zimbabwe. there’s no book, textbook, atlas or map in the class. but everybody in that school is eager for reading a book. they beg for a book and education. now, she is putting a school from London, UK. as contradiction, and she told that this school has fantastic library but in fact nobody in the school cares about reading. i’m again telling, she was not criticizing the blogging and internet. she was telling that we, our generation, should give a way of educating and connection to our traditions to next generation, regardless of they are born in rich country or poor country – and the way can be a printed book or any other, but in her perspective, printed book will be better for some poor countries.

i don’t think it is really worth whether the blog and internet is enriching our generation or not. it is our NEXT GENERATION that i think we really need to care.
